Master Harold auditions

Dreamwell - If you can play a 16 year old boy, you may wish to audition for the role of "Master Harold" for Athol Fugard's Master Harold... and the Boys August 2 at 2 pm and August 3 at 7 pm in Room C at the Iowa City Public Library. Rehearsals will begin on August 6. For further information about auditions and performances, call the director Rachael Lindhart at 319-337-2206 or e-mail lindhrach@aol.com.

The roles of Sam and Willie have already been cast. We are pleased to announce that the roles will be played by Roe Lloyd and Patrick Rashad, both Iowa City actors. Auditions will be held for the role of "Master Harold" who is a schoolboy about 15 or 16 years old. This is a complex and intriguing role for a young actor. Actual age will be considered, but an older (than 16) actor who looks younger could be cast. The play turns on the complex emotional and psychological interaction between the brothers, who have known Hally since he was a young boy, and Hally as he begins to turn from a boy to a man.

Performances will be at the UU Society (at Iowa Avenue and Gilbert Street) on September 25 & 26 and October 2 & 3; all performances are at 7:30 pm.

Continuing Dreamwell's Season of Inciting Theatre, this is a play set during the darkest time of apartheid in South Africa, the 1950s. It premiered in the US in 1982 shortly after it was written, but was not performed in South Africa until later. It takes place in a tearoom in Port Elizabeth, owned by an invalid white man, the father of "Master Harold" a young student, known as Hally. Long-time employees are really running the place since the owner is hospitalized. They are Sam and Willie, black men in their 30's or 40's, who are brothers.

2nd Annual All in a Day Play Festival

Dreamwell Theatre/City Circle - Two theatre companies join together this weekend to create seven 10 minute plays in just 24 hours. Dreamwell Theatre and City Circle Acting Company of Coralville will present the 2nd Annual All in a Day Play Festival on August 1st at the Englert Theatre in association with the Summer of the Arts.

On the night of Friday, July 31st, six writers, six directors and a host of actors will come together to create six original plays. Twenty four hours later, Iowa City area theatre lovers will be treated to a variety of unique shows after a whirlwind of creative mayhem.

“We give the writers a location and a genre and maybe one other constraint,” said Matt Falduto, Dreamwell Theatre founder. “They know how many actors they have and then have to write a ten minute play by 8 am Saturday morning when the actors and directors take over.”

You can follow the creative process through twitter as writers, directors and actors will be tweeting as they work. The hash tag is #allinadayplayfest.

Last year's inaugural production played to a packed house and resulted in a variety of exciting and imaginative projects that left audiences wowed and entertained.

“We were overwhelmed by the turnout last year,” says Brian Tanner, another organizer of the event. “We kept having people ask us if we were going to do the event again.”

Tickets are $7 at the door. For more information, contact Dreamwell Theatre at 319-541-0140 or City Circle at 319-541-2980. Or go here.
