Monologues at Riverside

Riverside - Walking the Wire: Monologues at Riverside will run from February 28 – March 2. Directed by Jody Hovland, the 9th annual festival features twelve monologues from playwrights in Iowa and across the country.

Walking the Wire brings theatre back to its most simple form, with a dimly lit stage and a single actor telling a story. The evening will be a roller coaster of emotion, as the actors portray everything from a chronic liar, a mother of the bride (whose soon to be son-in-law is soon to be hauled off to prison), an overly enthusiastic political fan, and a small town waitress who protests pennies as a tip. The backdrop is set everywhere from a small town diner to a Laundromat to the Massacre at Wounded Knee. Some of Riverside Theatre’s favorite actors will return to the stage, such as Kristen Behrendt, John Watkins, Shamis Beckley, Meghann Foster, Scot Hughes and more.

Riverside Theatre put out a national call for monologue submissions during the summer of 2007. Twelve were chosen representing playwrights from all over the country, each monologue falling into the theme of this year’s festival, The Midwest: Beyond the Corn. Playwrights include William Borden (Royse City, TX), Diane Cribbs (Haverford, PA), Kent Forsberg (Middleton, WI), Megan Gogerty (Iowa City, IA), Frank Higgins (Kansas City, MO), Robert Kiefer (Nashville, TN), Shirley King (Benicia, CA), Albert Pergande (Orlando, FL), Gwendolyn Rice (Madison, WI), Leah Ryan (Sunnyside, NY), Amy Tofte (Los Angeles, CA), and Carlynn Trout (Columbia, MO).

Tickets are $12 - $24, and can be purchased at the Riverside Theatre box office at (319) 338-7672 or online here.

Wish I could bet there to attend this event. Thanks so much for choosing my mother-of-the-bride monologue, MURLOCK, USA, written especially for Riverside Theatre. This monologue has since been produced twice and I've also developed it into a two act play.

My very best wishes --
