Cedar Rapids - Classics at Brucemore's summer production this year is Tenessee Williams' The Night of the Iguana. The play debuted in 1961 and won the New York Drama Critics reward. Jason Alberty directs.
The story revolves around Reverend Shannon, who is working as a tour guide since being disgraced as a minister. A nervous wreck, Shannon strands his busful of Baptist schoolteachers at the Mexican resort of one Maxine Faulk, which is where the action takes place.
The Night of the Iguana portrays a variety of interesting characters in both comic and dramatic situations. It's one of Williams' best-regarded works, and Alberty thinks it's perfect for Classic at Brucemore. "We chose this show for the Classics because it has all the great hallmarks of a Classics show,"Alberty says. "A gorgeous outdoor setting, compelling characters, a classic literary pedigree, and themes that reach out to all of us."
The Night of the Iguana runs July 12 - 14 and 19 - 21 at 8:00 at the Brucemore Estate. Tickets are $20 at the gate, $18 in advance ($15 for Brucemore members or students). Call 319.362.7375 or visit the Brucemore store for tickets.
