Staged Reading of The Machine Stops

Iowa City — Act One of The Machine Stops, an opera-in-progress by guitarist John Lake (libretto by Cecile Goding), will be performed on the U.I. campus—Biology Bldg. East—on June 17 from 7:30-8:30 p.m.

The Machine Stops, based on a 1909 story by E.M. Forster, imagines a world in which we inhabit separate rooms, isolated from the natural world and from each other. This staged reading—with singers Megan O’Brien, Jeremiah Shobe, Genevieve Heinrich, and Raquel Loya— is sponsored by the Iowa Summer Writing Festival and Old Capitol Opera. It will be directed by Chicago playwright Beau O’Reilly, a founding member of the Curious Theatre Branch, now in its 25th year.
