Step Afrika! Comes to Coe

Cedar Rapids - Step Afrika!, one of the top 10 African-American dance companies in the United States, will integrate songs, storytelling and humor with audience participation in an upcoming Marquis Series event at Coe College. The performance will be held on Friday, Jan. 30, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Sinclair Auditorium.

Tickets are $15 for the general public, $10 for students and seniors. Seating is available by calling the Coe College Box Office at 319-399-8600, Monday – Friday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Tickets will also be available at the door the night of the event.

Founded in 1994, Step Afrika! is the first professional company dedicated to the tradition of stepping. The group blends percussive dance styles practiced by historically African-American fraternities and sororities, as well as traditional African dance and influences from a variety of other dance forms.

Step Afrika! promotes stepping as an educational tool for young people focusing on teamwork, academic achievement and cross-cultural understanding. In its home of Washington, D.C. and in cities around the world, the company holds workshops, residency programs and art education activities for K-12 and college students. Performances have been described by audiences as "a jubilation of rhythm and spirit that harks back to the essence of dancing: people moving together in harmony for the greater good."

The Coe College Lecture and Performance Series is funded in part by a gift from the estate of Sarah Marquis in honor of her father, Dr. John A. Marquis, who was president of Coe College from 1909-1920. The purpose of the series is to bring entertainment and educational experiences to the Coe campus for the benefit of the entire community.

Coe College offers superb academics and exciting co-curricular activities in a thriving urban setting that promotes student growth and success. Established in 1851, Coe has a national reputation for academic excellence enhanced by a student-centered, highly supportive campus environment. Coe’s vibrant Cedar Rapids location provides an abundance of internships for students and career opportunities for graduates.
