Cedar Rapids - The Coe College Department of Theatre Arts will present a staged reading of the first-prize winner in the 2015 Coe Playwriting Competition. The reading of The Liar Paradox by playwright Kristin Idaszak will take place in Dows Theatre on Thursday, April 23, at 4 p.m. It is free and open to the public, with a discussion to follow the reading.

Reading of Clybourne Park Feb 15-16
Clybourne Park is a comedy-drama response to the classic play A Raisin in the Sun. It is the winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize and 2012 Tony Award. Act One takes place in 1959 as nervous community leaders attempt to stop the sale of a home to an African-American family. Act Two is set in the same house in present day and the now predominantly African-American neighborhood battles to hold its ground in the face of gentrification. The play is loosely based on historical events in the city of Chicago. This show contains strong language. Admission to Clybourne Park is free. There will be a discussion following each performance.

Reading of Dental Society Midwinter Meeting
About the Play
Dentists fill the Skokie, Illinois Marriot for the Dental Society Midwinter Meeting during one of the coldest Januaries on record. Tension fills the conference rooms because of an unbelievable dentistry scandal - Dental Society President Morris J. Morris, Jr. recently left his wife for his dental hygienist, Neena! But worse, much worse than that, Morris J. Morris, Jr. has been allowing his new love to perform advanced dental procedures without a license. How can the Dental Society ever rebuild their trust in the morality of dentistry? A unique comedy.

Actors Wanted for Staged Reading
Mt. Vernon - Joe Jennison has scheduled a reading of his new farce, Twinsburg, for Wednesday, March 20, at 8 p.m., as part of the Cabin Fever Comedy Festival in Mount Vernon.
The play is a two-act farce. Three actors are needed.
Time commitment: Tuesday, March 19, from 7 to 10, to rehearse. Wednesday, March 20, from 8 to 10 to perform. No memorization. Very little movement.

Red Door offers staged reading
Red Door - As part of the CRecycle Eco-Art Fest and part of their ongoing season of new plays Red Door Ensemble will be performing a free reading of James Trainor's Blood on the Canvas on April 17th at 3pm at the Matyk Building, 1029 3rd Street SE Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
This play concerns the fundamental question: what would you sacrifice for your art? Some characters try to connect with a recently deceased artist and the painting she lost her life to. Others resist connecting to her. This play also concerns such topics as responsibility of the family, drug use, and how to handle the greatest decisions of our lives.
The production will be one of two arts productions at the Matyk Building on April 17th involved with the Eco-Arts Festival. The festival is the first of its kind in the New Bohemia cultural district and is intended to promote the preservation of our communities and promote the reuse of man-made objects in the form of art.
Red Door Ensemble is a nonprofit arts organization dedicated to the production of new plays in an ensemble environment throughout the Iowa Cultural Corridor.

Tonight only - free reading at Riverside
Riverside - Riverside Theatre will host a reading of Militant Language: A Play With Sand, by Sean Christopher Lewis on Wednesday, November 4 at 7:00 p.m. at Riverside Theatre, 213 N. Gilbert Street. This one night only event is free and open to the public.
Set in a remote Iraqi construction site, Militant Language explores the violence of our current conflict, its consequences on our soldiers, and how war, at times, can make as much sense as sand falling from the heavens.
The reading is directed by Jennifer Fawcett.
Playwright Sean Christopher Lewis is the recipient of awards including the Rosa Parks Award for Social Justice in Playwriting from the Kennedy Center, The William Inge Arts Center Playwright Residency, and a National New Play Network Emerging Playwright Residency. He holds an MFA from the Iowa Playwrights Workshop and currently resides in Iowa City.
Five professional theatres presented a joint world premiere of Militant Language in 2008. This special reading of the play is part of Riverside Theatre’s National Endowment for the Arts grant activities.

Sirius Rising Reading at Riverside
Riverside - Riverside Theatre will host a play reading for Sirius Rising, a play by Cedar Falls playwright Gwendolyn Schwinke on Tuesday, April 7 at 6:30 pm. The audience is invited to stay after the reading for a talkback with the playwright.
Sirius Rising is a play about the practical magic of long-term relationships woven together with the Egyptian myth of Isis and Osiris. As a flood of epic proportions descends on a rural farm community, four women discover that human connection is their only shelter against the storm.
According to Schwinke, audiences will get the chance to see familiar characters during the reading. “I wanted to bring to the stage the farm women that I know: smart, strong, full-blooded and funny,” said Schwinke. “Although the characters are dealing with more extreme situations than most of us face, they remind us that we can live through tragedy with courage, humor and love.”
Sirius Rising has been selected for inclusion in new-play festivals at Seattle Repertory Theatre, Judith Shakespeare Company in New York City, The Jungle Theatre and The Playwrights' Center in Minneapolis.
The reading will feature four of the actors appearing in Riverside Theatre’s current production of Raising Medusa - Kristy Hartsgrove, Jody Hovland, Nancy Youngblut, and Jaclyn June Johnson; as well as Ron Clark.
Playwright Gwendolyn Schwinke grew up on a farm in Missouri, has lived in Minneapolis and New York City, and now teaches Theatre at the University of Northern Iowa. She feels that her play offers something for everyone. “It’s a little bit murder mystery, a little bit ancient myth, and a little bit love story. And there's a lot of humor in it.”
