ABOUT THE OPERA
A silly, whimsical story of love and politics, the central character, Nanki-Poo, the son of the Mikado (emperor) of Japan, is trying to escape an arranged marriage by disguising himself as a travelling musician and leaving home. During his travels he falls in love with a girl named Yum-Yum who is, to his dismay, engaged to be married. As Nanki-Poo pursues Yum-Yum, hijinks ensue.

The Mikado, a comic opera in two acts by Arthur Sullivan (music) and W.S. Gilbert (libretto), opened on March 14, 1885 at the Savoy Theatre in London. The opera was so popular that by the end of that year over 150 companies in Europe and America were producing the show. By setting the opera in Japan it allowed Gilbert to comment on British politics and institutions more freely. Today The Mikado is still one of the most widely loved and performed operas and can still be considered a relevant satire.

ABOUT BRUCEMORE
One of only twenty-six National Trust historic sites in the United States, the Brucemore Mansion is a museum and a community cultural center. The Mikado will be performed on the lush lawn of the gorgeous Brucemore grounds. Visitors are welcome to bring blankets, chairs, picnics and beverages of their choice to enjoy during the show.
