Iowa City - "You've come to expect beautiful imagery and pertinent content from Working Group Theatre and we have yet to shy away: whether with a set made entirely out of glass or dancers suspended above the Englert stage we have striven to excite, inquire and surprise your senses and your mind.
With our newest project, Out of Bounds, we return to Riverside Theatre with a moving play based on interviews with children, parents, teachers and others affected by bullying in our community. Written by Jennifer Fawcett and directed by Sean Christopher Lewis (the team behind last year's Broken Chord), with shadow puppetry from Buffy Quintero and Jen Shook, illustrations from Benjamin Mackey and original music from Katie Roche, Out of Bounds runs for four shows only, May 1-4 at Riverside Theatre.
Out of Bounds is a two-part project commissioned by Hancher, to explore the effects of cyber-bullying in our schools and our community. The first part of this project was a one-act play for middle school students that was performed for 3000+ students last fall and winter.
This second part is about the parents, teachers and other adults struggling to help kids deal with bullying, while for some the memories of their own childhood bullies still follow them.
There are limited seats available for the four show run, Thursday May 1 – Saturday May 3 at 7:30pm and Sunday May 4 at 2pm.
After each show, we invite the audience to stay for a post-show discussion. Our guests include parents who have dealt with their child being relentlessly bullied, researchers on the front lines of anti-bullying programs from the University of Iowa College of Public Health, a middle school principal, and the artistic team behind the show.
Tickets are $10 - $25 and available at www.hancher.uiowa.edu."
