Auditions for Bob: A Life in Five Acts

Iowa City - "BOB: A Life in Five Acts is a big, funny and touching epic about the life of Bob from his birth in a White Castle bathroom through his journey to become a “great, great man” (as foretold by a fortune cookie). His trip across America and across time is populated by dozens of people, each with their own tales to tell. Bob must learn what he can from each of them and try to give them some part of himself in return, as he tries to become the man he wants to be.

Auditions will be at the Iowa City Public Library on January 17 from 1:00-5:00 and January 20 from 6:00-9:00. There will be sides from the script for cold readings, but actors are also welcome to prepare a 1-2 minute monologue. Copies of the script are on reserve at the library information desk. If you are not able to make these times, please contact the director at nate.j.sullivan@gmail.com to make alternate arrangements.

Cast Breakdown

Bob: male, any age/race. We see him from birth to old age, and we see his personal growth from open-minded child to open-hearted young man, then from middle-aged bitterness to the wisdom of his later years as he experiences everything this nation has to offer.

Chorus: 4-6 actors of any gender/age/race. Seeking energetic story tellers with solid comedic timing and an ability to create distinctive characters. This group will play all of the people that Bob meets along the way. This includes:

Jeanine: a lonely White Castle employee who adopts the infant Bob and takes him on a 12-year educational road trip.

Helen: Bob’s birth mother. A desperate woman at the end of her rope who abandons her baby in a White Castle bathroom with nothing but a “good luck”.

Connor: a police officer who is madly in love with Jeanine and will do anything he can to win her heart.

Gunther: a down-on-his luck animal trainer looking to redeem himself for his past transgressions.

Amelia: the daughter of a rich CEO who is traveling the world to complete her “list” before she marries a man she doesn’t love."
